Hospital Bag Checklist for New Mums

Becoming a parent is one of the most beautiful things that could happen to you. Finally, you will be able to hold your baby in your hands as long as you want, to cuddle, to hug, to smell his head and his breath. Yeah, crazy right?! No matter how weird it sounds, but smelling the baby’s breath is something moms love to do. It’s so sweet, pure and innocent, especially when talking about exclusively breastfed babies. Priceless.

But before you get there, you will have to prepare for this new and exciting period and plan ahead. Preparing the hospital bag is one of the first steps that you can take. In fact, this is something that can really shake you off, as you know that you can see your baby in no time. Since you will stay between 1 to 5 nights in the hospital, having a pre packed hospital bag is recommended. Being prepared for the day is of vital importance, especially for those moms who plan to give birth naturally as you don’t know when it’ll be the time. Contractions can happen any time during the day or night, so it’s better to be prepared, right?!

What to Pack for Labour and Birth?

  1. Whether you have a natural birth or c-section intervention, there are some essential things that you will need either way.
  2. Wrap around gown, sarong or extremely large and loose t-shirt are the comfiest clothing piece to wear.
  3. Slip-on shoes or thongs are also a great type of footwear for the hospital as they are easy to put on and off.
  4. Hair tie and hairband are also a must as they will keep away any hair from your face.
  5. Lip balm and face cream are also essential.
  6. Brushing your teeth is also important, so make sure you don’t forget your toothbrush and toothpaste.
  7. Plastic bags for dirty clothes is essential in order to mix clean with dirty clothes.

What to Pack after Birth?

  1. Comfortable maternity undies are a must to wear after giving birth. In case you have had a cesarean section, some moms swear by the benefits of wearing granny undies as they are great in holding the stomach while not irritating the scar as they are high-waisted.
  2. Maternity pads, nipple balm, nursing gown, socks and shoes should take a place in your pre packed hospital bag as they are a life saviour. When in the search for maternity pads make sure you choose soft organic cotton ones as your ‘down’ area would be delicate and sensitive especially after a natural birth. Have at least two packages when at the hospital as bleeding won’t stop immediately. It can last for up to 6 weeks or more after giving birth. It is also recommended for the nipple balm to be made of natural and organic compounds which are safe for the baby. A nipple balm is a must as it is one of the greatest things that can help you heal the cracked, sore or bloody nipples.
  3. Breast pads are another essential thing that you should pack in the maternity bag. If possible, buy from the disposable ones as they are more convenient during your hospital stay.
  4. Although this is optional, you can also pack your new nursing bra. Make sure to choose one that has no wires because wires can cut off milk ducts and cause mastitis.
  5. Many hospitals include the essentials for the first days of your baby’s life. If not sure, make sure you pack nappies, wipes, onesie and a soft cotton blanket.
  6. The going home outfit should also be a part of that bag as you are going to see your little bundle of joy for the first time in real clothes. Makes sure that everything you have both is made of cotton if possible organic cotton. Babies deserve the best, and cotton is considered as one of the softest, comfiest and safest types of fabrics even for babies. They are designed for their gentle skin as they cause no irritation nor allergies.
  7. Although you can’t put it in your hospital bag as it is too big (chuckles), make sure that you have placed and carefully installed the car seat in the car.

As you can see, the list is not that long, you just need to find the right products and be prepared for the new stage of your life. This would be something completely new for you, so it is best to be prepared for everything that comes. One thing is certain, this new phase of your life will certainly be challenging, but it’s going to be the best. You will see the most beautiful thing in this whole world, the thing that you will love and cherish forever, no matter what. Just be prepared, be patient and enjoy it!
